Chestnut - Year 3/4

Teachers: Mrs Walmsley and Mrs Evernden, with Mrs Morrish, Mrs Reed and Ms Martyn.

Timetable this term:

Timetable this term:

Maths: The children have made fantastic progress with their times tables, and nearly everyone has secured all of their facts—well done! Keep practising lots at home so that you can become even quicker, more confident, and truly fluent. Next term, our maths lessons will focus on decimals, money, and shape, while we continue to build our understanding of finding fractions of amounts and the four operations (+ – x ÷).

Literacy: The children have made great progress in their writing, showing confidence in starting sentences in a variety of ways and taking care to check their spellings accurately. This is a fantastic achievement and is really strengthening the quality of their work. Next term, we will continue to develop our use of speech in story writing, before moving on to learning how to create persuasive adverts and write engaging newspaper reports.

Home Learning:

Maths: Please encourage your child to practise their times tables facts. Year 3s need to have secured their 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8 times table by the end of the year. Year 4s need to have secured up to the 12 times tables by June. They can practise by writing out their times tables, reciting them out loud or by playing TT Rockstars and Stick and Split. Regular practice will make a huge difference to how easy they find maths moving forward.

Reading: Please try to listen to your child read every day/ night for at least 20-30 minutes. If they are resistant, you could take it in turns to read a sentence/ page each or set a timer for a shorter amount of time and slowly build up to 20 minutes.

Please also make time to read to your child or for them to listen to audiobooks. Picture books are not just for little ones; they are incredibly valuable for older children too as they often hold important social and emotional messages. Watching quality films is also great for literacy development as they help to strengthen and broaden vocabulary and can develop inference skills.

Weekly Spellings: A paper copy of the following week’s spellings will come home each Friday. They will also be posted on Google Classroom. The children will be tested on some of these spellings the following Thursday in the form of a dictation.

Finally, if your child requires any medication, please ensure this is also brought to school on the first day of term.

Kind regards, team Chestnut.
