Need help choosing a new book? Recommended websites from Mr Lee and Devon School Library Service

Mr Lee’s Favourite Websites

A simple tool created by Booktrust to help children find a book they will enjoy reading. First choose an age range, then narrow the search results by choosing as many themes as you want e.g. funny, scary, sport. Each book has an outline of the story and the selection is constantly updated.

This site is really for parents and has lots of suggestions of good books for nursery, KS1 and lower KS2 children.  I really like the video clips, weblinks and suggested art/craft activities (including full instructions for how to make playdough!).

Devon Library Service Recommended Websites

An online magazine written for teachers and librarians but you can look
too and read the reviews. It has some articles first and then gets into the reviews by age e.g. Under 5’s, 5-8 and 8-10.

A wealth of constantly updated book suggestions. You can search for books by age of reader and then read a brief synopsis. For many of the books there is an extract available to read. The site also includes non-fiction books and highlights the many book
awards shortlists.

An interactive children’s book review site which has been online since 2014. It currently contains over 30,000 reviews written by children, parents, teachers and librarians.

Registering as a reviewer is simple. You create an account as an adult and then have the facility to add sub-accounts for your own children or the pupils in your class. The quality and length of reviews on the site varies wildly! You can search for books by author, title, illustrator or age of reader.
